Today in class we dicussed a lot about dance and music. I love the idea of dance and music in the culture of Crete and Greece. We learned about Maria Hnarkaki's education in dance. She got certified at four different schools for dance is very knowledgable in both music and dance. After learning this we discussed instruments in Greece. Instruments here in Crete are very unique they are made out of animal skins and also in the shapes of animal or nature. I found it interesting with the different types of shapes of the instruments. Some resembled an animal very closely.
This afternoon we met with a Dr. Agisilaos Aligizakis, MD, PhD. He is a doctor of orthopedics and also dances for a living for his way of health and to promote this to the people of Crete and Greece. He grew up learning these dances and then went to get his Doctrine in the universities. The dances we learned were four traditional dances in the culture. The first was the easiest called Pentozali which is a marching dance with holding the shoulders that gives you a group idea. There are two phases of the dance, a slow paced and the quick paced. The next was Syrtos and it is called this because feet are kept close to the ground. This dance has 11 steps. These two dances I enjoyed the most because they were the easiest for me and also I liked dance in the circle. The next was Sousta with the three steps. Most intimate dance in weddings or for couples. This was a little difficult, but fun to do with a couple. Finally we learned Maleviziotis that has 16 steps and is a much faster pace. This one was very difficult for me and I don't think I could do it at full pace with the music. This was a great exercise physically and mentally. I really had a great time learning these dances and can not wait to show my family when I return home.
