First Day of Travel! 2 July 2013

Palace of Knossos

Today in Crete we visited the city of Heraklion. We started off getting on the bus and drove through the town up to the Palace of Knossos. This palace was like an ancient city of ruins surrounding the city and mountains.

It was built to be in multiple sections with openings or “plazas” to allow light and air circulation into the rooms. It was amazing to see how the structure was built during the Minoan Era and the paintings and pottery that was there.

Under the fig tree!

Monuments of Greece

After viewing the Palace of Knossos we went to the museum of the Palace and then travelled to the Monuments of Crete museum.

Delicious Crepes
We then made our way into the large city of Heraklion. First stop, lunch at a restaurant that sold crepes. It was delicious! Then we travelled to the jewelry store… where I spent a little too much money!

Lighting a candle in the Parish of Titus

Traveling around the city was fun and educating. We went to the Parish of St. Titus, visited lions square, saw local shops, and kiosks, and travelled to the Mediterranean boat ports to see a beautiful view of the city and sea.

After a walk through the city we travelled to the Heraklion Museum. Looking at the wars, art, how they lived, and established themselves. In such a small place there was such a concise & dense history.

The final destination was at Kazantzakis Tomb where you can view the whole city.  And on his tomb stated in Greek "I hope for nothing, I am nothing, I am free."

The weather continues to be very warm but beautiful and so far I have been loving this experience!
