Day 8: 10 July 2013

Today class was a bit different. We had a speaker Dr. Irene Sotiropoulou who spoke about her studies and life in Greece and experiences with economy.

We began class by first discussing our travels yesterday. We compared an article, At home on the Island of Warmth and Hospitality on NPR, on how traveling around to different communities we have experienced the same situations. Some of the experiences we all enjoyed were the banana planation. It was amazing to see how the banana plantation only had one main worker. It is a whole different type of working style here. What was interesting to find out that the banana plantation is different from the one I visited back in Costa Rica. I was not aware that the climate was similar here. One of the other differences was that the bananas here are a lot smaller. Theodore also explained how genetic engineering is not allowed for fruit or other food in Europe. I think this is important because its more natural and healthy for us.

Next Dr. Irene Sotiropoulou spoke to us about language and the economy. It was interesting to hear her take on the economy and how it can be used and compared in different languages. She even made a comparison to Snow White to business and the economy. Languages can change the meaning of economy. Sometimes economy can be sharing within a household and sharing and making rules. Economy can also be the space where people are changing their products to make a profit in the same space or economy can be completely seperated from society. It was interesting to here her ideas about economy and how she is always expanding on this idea.

To read a bit about her work you can find it here:
