Day 9: Trip to Chania 11 July 2013

Us with the author. He was holding the gifts we gave him!

Today we travelled to Chania for an overnight stay. It was a long trip there and we had a full day of interesting trips planned. First we travelled to meet the author of Venizelos book. He was very nice and sat down with us to answer any questions we had about the book and also his relationship to Venizelos. He even gave us signed copies of his book.

Provost
Next we travelled to the Old Port in Chania. He we met the provost from the University in Chania. He also was very kind and shared his thoughts and ideas about the university. It was interesting to hear about the difference in education compared to in America. The view from his office was beautiful. The port was such an interesting and amazing place to look at. You could see all the homes and also boats. I loved watching the horse and carriages taking people around. It reminded me of some old world place with the sounds and sights but in modern day.

At the old port with a beautiful light house behind me.

The staircases, you can see the cables
and original structure.

As we walked through the port for a bit we passed Arsenali. Arsenali is the Centre of Architecture for the Mediterranean. Even though this was not planned. I asked to walk in since of my interest in Architecture. It was amazing to look at and my style of interior architecture. The stair cases and floors all hung from cables. The interior was modern but the walls and original building was the old stone structure. This place in the fall will have a big conference for all the other Architecture schools in Europe. I really wish I could attend!

Upstairs of Arsenali

Olive oil factory
Next we travelled to the olive oil factory, Terra Creta. This was so exciting for me since I have a love of olive oil. Getting to see it made at a factory and tasting the olive oil was really a great experience. I learned about the acidity of olive oils and also the differences in thicker and more watered down. It was interesting to see the production and also that they produced others olive oil. Not just used their own olives.

Olive oil tasting time!

You can see the drop in the sand here.

As we travelled through Chania we stopped at the beach. It was beautiful and it is also known to be that way. We were not here long but one thing that caught my attention was the drop in the sand to the sea. It was like what I am used to on the East coast when we get erosions on the beach. This erosion of the beach here was from when they get storms. And in the seasons where the storms are less common they flatten it back out.

Dakos making, a greek salad sandwich!
Finally we stopped at the bakery of Tsatsaronakis Family Bakery “To Manna.” This was the first time I have ever seen such a large and organized production in a bakery. Their bread is double baked so it is a lot harder and is a popular breads used by the Greeks.

The last stop was our hotel for the night Molos Bay Hotel. It was beautiful and a great stay. We got to meet the Tsatsaronakis family and they brought us a delicious dinner. Everyone today was so nice and generous.
